What Is Green Screen Background?

Green Screen Background is a special effect that makes a subject appear in different locations by imposing images. Gone are the days when photographers would go hunting for locations. Now all they have to do is hook up a green screen photography set up and click away.

Perhaps the most common use of this is weather forecast broadcast for TV news stations. The meteorologist stands in front of green screen backdrops, pointing to maps and radar. (Photo Credit) Backgrounds change as information moves forward from city, state, national weather forecast to radar etc. While blue screen backgrounds are more commonly used, for digital photography, green screens have become popular due to the amount of lightning required to project quality image.

Photographers all over the world use green screens to create images that grab attention. The process of using green screens has made the experience cost effective and extremely efficient. The coordination however could get a little tricky as one has to have a clear picture in mind about what one wants.

The set up is extremely simple and all it requires is a green screen background and lights that will match the shot. The photographer plays an essential role in determining what the light set up would be like depending on his vision.

Types of Green Screen Backdrops

Green screen drops come in all sizes and shapes. The least expensive backdrop will be a sheet from fabric store. One step above would be in sizes 5′ by 7′ or 6′ by 9′.  Anything larger than this size might require more than stands to set up, and the larger the backdrop it gets, the pricier it becomes.

When looking at screen drops, find out if the drop comes with stands or are sold separate.  Seamless fabric drops or wrinkle free drops are the most popular backdrops while portable and even painted walls are used as backgrounds. Stands are sold separately, starting around $50 for a decent product.

Many green screen backgrounds are available at Amazon.com or through online search — Rolled cloth backdrop,  portable “flexcreens”, green muslin, green woven polyester or painted walls etc. It’s possible to make a green screen with rolled paper for small size although paper green screens might glare.

For mobile solution, however, it’s easier to just buy a portable flexible screen. If purchasing anything online, be sure to ask for “rolled” paper instead of “folded” paper to avoid creases. In addition, inquire whether or not the backdrop comes with stands. It may come with carrying bag when not in use, and lighting kit can be purchased as one bundle for additional discount etc.

  • Green paper – cheapest method, purchase enough papers to cover a wall, this might glare, which becomes an issue while editing.
  • Rolled sheet – sheet should not be folded if possible. Use rolled sheet and most popular type can be purchased online.
  • Fabric – local fabric store or online.
  • Flexcreen – portable and handy if changing location from indoor to outdoor.

Backdrops for Photography and Film Green screen backdrops have made film-making and digital photography easier. The technology is easy to use and can be deployed to create movies with stunning images. Everyone from television to filmmakers is using these to tell stories that would have been left untold if not for these magical screens.

The process is indeed simple and all a filmmaker or photographer has to do is imagine a situation in their head and shoot against a green screen. The footage gets superimposed on the green screen with the help of editing software.

Portable Screens News anchors who work on travel shows use portable green screen backgrounds. The advantage is that they can shoot most shows while they are traveling, and for scenes that would require the feel of a studio they can easily shoot those shots against a portable green screen. Once the footage is sent to the editing studio, the editors will simply hook up a virtual set against the green screen to film a travel show combined with studio footage and no extra effort. Portable green screens are one of the best ways to save time and money for people who do most of their reporting on the run. Furthermore, for filmmakers who are doing most of their shoots outdoors, it saves setting up sets that can be easily borrowed from stock digital backgrounds.

Digital Backgrounds When filmmakers shoot against a green screen they would need footage to superimpose on the green screen to create the idea they have in mind. Green screen digital backgrounds are basically footage or images that are superimposed on the screen to create the imagery required by the director or photographer.

Today online providers of digital backgrounds have stock footage and stock images of a humongous variety. It’s easy to pick from landscapes of any kind depending on the look needed. This service has made film making for amateur filmmakers extremely cost effective as they do not have to spend their resources on creating special backgrounds.

Lighting Up Green Screens Green screen drops can be as inexpensive as $15 plastic sheet, and once set up, it’s time to shoot digital photography. If the scene is shot at indoor studio, either hydrogen lights or florescent lights with umbrella holders will prevent lighting issues. Without adequate light, the digital video can turn into grayish color. Built-in flash on digital cameras cast shadows. To prevent from shadows cast on the backdrop, combination of strobe light, diffuser, and good camera will produce quality work.

If green screen continues casting shadows, apply stronger light source or shoot outside. However, for indoor video shoot, strobe light alone may not be sufficient and the studio should provide “continuous” lighting for filming. Good quality strobe lighting kit can cost hundreds of dollars, and if that’s not in the budget, consider shooting outside. Overcast days project clearer lighting.

Green Screen Strobe Photography Green screen strobe photography has made creating images a whole lot simpler. Photographers used to spend hours and days looking for locations that were perfect for their shoots. But now all they have to do is imagine a scenario in their head and easily replicate it with the help of a green screen background. However, it’s not just the green screen and the visual aids that do the trick.

The lighting has to be impeccable as well. For photography one needs strobe lights to light up the area and the model or product that is being shot. The right amount of lighting and the number of strobes will depend on what the director wants the shot to look like.

How to Set Up Strobes for a Green Screen Lighting is very essential when shooting with a green screen backdrop. Even though green screen backgrounds can do wonders for photography, the results will be ordinary if the lighting is not good. The photographer plays a very important role in setting up the lighting. Strobe lights are most commonly used in lighting up the set and it is easy to set up strobes for a green screen.

Four strobe lights with two lights in the front, in line with the camera and the other two at the back in line with the edge of the backdrop. Lighting can make all the difference to a great photograph.

No matter how great photo editing turns out to be in the end, if the lighting is bad, it is going to reflect in the imagery. Pay attention to the lighting because once a photograph is shot there is no looking back.
